Data Exploration and
Visualisation
This website is the homepage for the Data Exploration and
Visualisation content of the Data Exploration, Visualisation and
Unsupervised Learning (DEVUL) module.
Course and class
structure
The course is divided in two parts. Part 1 will cover the first two
weeks and focus on data exploration and visualisation. Part 1 will be
taught by Jonathan Cumming. Part 2 will cover the second two weeks and
focus on unsupervised learning. Part 2 will be taught be Daniele
Turchetti.
The timetable for each week comprises two 1-hour lectures and three
2-hour workshops timetabled. The workshop sessions will be divided into
a 1 hour lecture and a 1 hour practical computer practical.
Web versions of the lecture notes and the worksheets for each
workshop can be found from the menu at the top of the page.
Workshops
- There are three workshops per week, running in sequence and
approximately following lecture material.
- Workshops will exclusively use R, so please ensure you have easy
access to RStudio either via a University PC or your own laptop.
- Due to Timetabling being beyond our control, some Workshops may
occur before the corresponding material is covered in lectures.
- Workshop worksheets will combine both standard lecture material and
examples with the opportunity to explore the lecture ideas on new
problems. If you’re happy with the basics, then skip over the
introductory material and jump straight to the exercises.
- Workshops will frequently require custom R packages/libraries. These
are indicated at the top of each worksheet with instructions for how to
obtain and install them.
