Student Awards

Pre-conference travel awards

The Statistical Modelling Society (SMS) and International Workshop on Statistical Modelling (IWSM) strongly encourage students to submit posters and papers. Therefore, some awards and some travel grants are provided.

PhD student travel awards
These are awards for non-UK students for travel costs up to 800 Euro plus the student conference registration (this may include journal and may include the short course but it needs to be early bird). The deadline to apply for this award is extended to Tuesday, 19th of March, 2024, by e-mail to iwsm-2024@durham.ac.uk. You will need a personal statement explaining why you believe the award would be essential or extremely helpful for you to attend the conference, plus a short letter by your supervisor confirming that you are a PhD student under their supervision, and that the abstract that you submitted earlier is largely built on your own work. We will notify successful applicants along with the paper acceptance notifications by April 8, 2024.

Durham summer grants
We offer up to three grants of £300 each for PhD students who also attend the APTS week in Durham (08-12/07/2024), and then wish to stay for the IWSM. The £300 will be for accommodation in Durham on the weekend between the two events and for the short course fee. The deadline to apply for this award is Tuesday, 2nd of April, 2024 by e-mail to iwsm-2024@durham.ac.uk. You will need a personal statement explaining why you believe the award would be helpful for you to attend the conference and/or the short course, plus a short letter by your supervisor that you are a PhD student under their supervision, that you intend to attend the short course, and that you are registered for the APTS week at Durham. We will notify successful applicants by April 15, 2024, so that you will know the outcome before the early bird registration deadline (April 22, 2024).
