Wednesday, July 17, afternoon: Choice of two excursions:

Option 1: Binchester Roman Fort and Auckland Castle: We will visit both of these venues, getting insight into different aspects of history of County Durham. The venues are connected by a 1-h walk, along a stretch of the Way of Life. A short-cut walk option (ca 20 minutes) into Bishop Auckland is possible. The excursion finshes with a Late-Afternoon-coffee (scones with jam and cream) in the Old library at Auckland Castle (part of the excursion fees). The bus will bring us back at 7:15pm into Durham City.
Option 2: A trip to the coast with a possibility to visit and climb the staircase of Sauter Lighthouse. There will be plenty of time to visit some secluded beaches in the area of the lighthouse, before we take a gentle walk along the cliff line to Marsden Grotto, where we have a light dinner (not part of the excursion fees). The bus will leave at about 7:30pm towards Durham City.
