In this module, we study linear spaces and linear maps, i.e.
mathematical structures that have many applications. The main topics we
shall cover are:
- Vector Spaces
- Linear Maps
- Matrices
- Determinants
- Spaces of Linear Maps
- Eigenvalues and Applications
Lecturer in 1st Term: Wojtek Zakrzewski. Office CM204 (through the Maths office), phone 43112.
Email: W.J.Zakrzewski at durham.ac.uk
Lectures:
Mondays at 4.15pm and Wednesdays at 10.00 in D110.
Books: There are many books on linear algebra. A good book
is S. Lipschutz, M. Lipson, Linear algebra, 3rd edition, Schaum's Oulines,
Mc. Graw Hill, ISBN 0071362002 which would be useful also for the second term
Any standard American college
text (ie any large book with "Linear Algebra" in the title) will also contain
most of what we do.
Tutorials & weekly assignments:
--Tutorials take place in weeks 2, 4, 6, 8 & 10
(from 15th October onwards), according to the
timetable.
