Project III 2025-26
Black Holes
Simon Ross
Description
Black holes are bodies that are so dense that not even light can escape from them. They are characterised by a surface called the event horizon, which is the limit of the part of the spacetime from which signals can escape to infinity. They provide a striking example of Einstein’s general relativity in action, and are actively studied both by observational astronomers and by formal theorists studying quantum gravity.
The project will explore features of black hole spacetimes, including geodesic motion, singularities inside black holes, causality and asymptotics. We will take an examples-first approach to general relativity inspired by the book by Hartle listed below.
