I am a member of the Centre for Particle Theory and the department of Mathematical Sciences at Durham University.
Teaching:
Epiphany: Single Maths A
Research:
The main topic of my research is the use of holographic dualities to study the description of spacetime in
string theory and the properties of strongly-coupled field theories. I have a particular interest in issues concerning black
holes and causal structure.
I have a separate page describing research
projects, including opportunities for PhD supervision.
You can also look at the CPT strings page, or my publication
list.
History: I have also been a member of the Relativity group in the Department of Physics at the University of California at Santa Barbara. I did my Ph.D. in the General Relativity group in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP), at the University of Cambridge. (While at Cambridge, I was also in St .John's College.) I was an undergraduate in the Department of Physics at the University of Waterloo.
Finally, here's a list of physics resources which I find useful.
I have been a member of Amnesty International, the human rights organisation, for more than a decade. I currently chair the Durham Group. If you live in Durham, do come along to a meeting. My favorite political site at the moment is the Independent Media Centre. More such links.
In my spare time, I mostly read and go to movies. There's a decent cinema in Newcastle. If you want something to read, why not buy this book or this one (written by my wife)? Alternatively, for something simpler, there's this one (written by my mother). My stepmother also wrote a book, in French. I also like taking pictures; you can see my photos on flickr.
