Background
Background
This will be the eleventh in the series of summer schools sponsored by EPSRC and now LMS. Previous schools have been particularly successful in attracting a full quota of EPSRC sponsored research students and academic staff, with a good attendance of non-EPSRC supported participants, including an increasing number from overseas.
The purpose of the Summer Schools has always been the delivery of high quality instructional courses at postgraduate level. The organisers have aimed to invite speakers who are internationally renowned as researchers in computational mathematics and scientific computing, and who have a strong reputation as lucid communicators of mathematics. The intended audience is a wide one, and will include research students, academics and people from industry. The lecturers will be encouraged to enable a person with
•an elementary knowledge of a subject to attain reasonable competence in it;
•a good initial knowledge to identify and begin work on unsolved problems.
Purpose
The accommodation is at Grey College, one of the Colleges at Durham University, which overlooks the Norman Cathedral and the City of Durham. It stands in attractively landscaped grounds and enjoys one of the finest views in Europe. All lectures take place in the Department of Mathematical Sciences and meals take place in Grey College which are 5 minutes walk apart. Within short walking distance one finds the University's main sports centre, a swimming pool and an 18 hole golf course. Durham city centre is also within walking distance. In previous years, extra-curricular and social events have included soccer games, wine tasting evenings, and afternoon trips to historic sights.
