DescriptionSampling theory is a crucial part of statistics, providing guidance on (optimal) data collection. There are many different sampling schemes, some pretty generally applicable while others are more suitable for specific situations. In this project, you will start with a study of basic sampling methods and their properties. This can be followed in a variety of ways, for example focus on a specific application area (e.g. sampling in auditing), or study of mathematical properties of some sampling schemes. The topic is very general, and in addition to clear links to topics in the Probability and Statistics modules in 1H-2H it can also link to Bayesian Statistics or topics from Decision Theory.
PrerequisitesStatistical Concepts IIReferencesAs so often, Wikipedia provides a useful starting point: Wikipedia entry on sampling. The classic, very good, book on the topic is `Sampling Techniques' by Cochran (Wiley, 3rd edition 1977).Please feel free to contact me - best by email |
